Ella and the Dandelions — Ella og Mælkebøtterne

Ella

Two post ago I showed a sketch for this quilt. I am not even close to finishing it but I would like to save some images from the process. I haven’t made anything like that for some time so it is quite nice to work this way again.
I love the photo I have from that day. The colours are very close to what she wore  that day and as she don’t want help she is always quite colourful.

It is approx. 80×80 cm. It is painted, dyed and will be appliqued.

Drawing with a Sewing Machine

No, it is not my drawing I want to present but a young artist I saw at a trade show yesterday: Harriet Riddell.

Visit her blog and website and be amazed.

I am impressed. From the stage, on her sewing machine, she made a portrait in 15 minutes. Unfortunately I haven’t got a photo of the portrait but I bought her book:

Around The World Blog Hop

Fiber Artist Franki Kohler invited me to participate in the Around The World Blog Hop.
Please use the link above and take a look at Franki’s beautiful art work (and not least her fabulous quilting).

For my part I have to answer some questions in this post and present the next blog hoppers who will, on Monday October 27, continue the blog hop.

Please check out the great and intriguing work of

Vera Holmgren
Marjorie Moser
Nina-Marie Sayre

And now – the questions:

What am I working on?

My work is normally following different paths.
Right now I am preparing dyed fabric for some abstract quilts and interpretations of two of my own images. Previously I haven’t used images much for quilting. One image  is with a flower which will be transformed into my second flower quilt (hopefully more to come). The other is an image of my youngest granddaughter which will be turned into my first very family quilt.
Beside the quilting I am working to improve my drawing, watercolour painting and photography.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I don’t know if it does.
I am largely driven by the need to learn – and try out – new methods and methods and materials never tried before.

Why do I create what I do?

I create because I am curious and want use what I learn and have learned. I love to work with the different disciplines in design, fabric dyeing, painting and printing  etc.

How does my creating process work?

The sources of my ideas are numerous. I use my own images and I have many. Internet, books, newspapers , TV, movies and even radio. Nature and home. My dyed fabric might also inspire to a quilt.
When I have chosen an idea to work with I move forward making a sketch or mockup, using PS Elements or using my design wall and my fabrics for a setup. Next step is to choose fabric and if I haven’t the fabric I need I continue with dyeing and printing fabric. Special items for embellishment are prepared if needed. The fabrics are cut and sewn together according to pattern/idea and some embellishment might be added. The quilt sandwich is prepared and quilted. The last embellishments are added.

Arashi Shibori

Arashi shibori

Some time ago I dyed pretty much arashi shibori fabric. I have looked at it several times without really knowing how to use it probably because I have a bit of a problem cutting up that beautiful fabric.
Right now I have 3 pieces in progress. All very different as I have let the fabric guide me.
These 3 pieces are now ready for quilting.

I have used Procion MX or thinned fabric paint for the arashi shibori.

—————————————

Today’s Watercolor Lesson – Dagens Akvarel Time

Scan-1_edited-1 Scan-2_edited-1

Today I had a real challenge. We should all do six paintings from different leaves, plants and twigs. We had six minutes to make a watercolor sketch of each.
Fast drawing and painting isn’t really me but it was fun today and I managed to get something on the paper pretty quick.
After we had made the six sketches we had some time to finish them.

In fact I found it so much fun that I might have to find a sketch book with watercolor paper – or make one myself.
